The AIDS: What Kids Need to Know program provides an introduction to the subject of HIV/AIDS. Program content addresses the myths, concerns, and fears students may have about this disease. The program focuses on the healthy immune system as well as changes that occur when the system is exposed to the HIV virus. Transmission of the virus and the difficulty of contracting this virus is discussed in an age-appropriate manner with a strong emphasis on prevention.

Bacteria Busters

Bacteria Busters is a fun-filled program aimed at introducing the topic of germs to studetns in an age-appropriate and friendly way. Students are introduced to different types of germs like bacteria, viruses, and fungi - including how they function in the body. Discussion around transmission of germs will focus on direct versus indirect methods of transmission. Emphasis is placed on the white blood cells of the Immune System as the defense system inside the body utilized to fight off pathogens. Finally, the program concludes on a discussion of prevention including the importance of handwashing and identifying objects that are okay to share versus objects that should never be shared, for health and hygiene purposes.

Clean to the Core is a program designed to focus on the topic of personal hygiene. Students are introduced to proper cleanliness practices and how they can help to maintain overall health and reduce, or even prevent, illness. Through interactive activities and fun experiments, this program will help students understand the importance and benefits of good personal hygiene to overall health and wellness, especially during adolescence. Students can gain awareness of various skills necessary to enhance personal hygiene practices, including taking care of skin, face, and hair. Proper handwashing is addressed, and well as cleanliness habits in both public places and within the home.

Stop the Infections

The Stop the Infections program is designed to cover what can be a difficult/uncomfortable topic for students in an open and honest way. Students will be introduced to the basic signs & symptoms of common sexually transmitted infections with an emphasis on being proactive about sexual health by discussing any concerns with a physician. Other topics include transmission of sexually transmitted infections through bodily fluids and ways to decrease risk of or prevent contraction of sexually transmitted infections, including the choice of abstinence.

Social Emotional - Character Education / Bullying Prevention

Bullying Hurts

Grade Range: Grades 1 to 3.

Bullying hurts everyone involved, and the Bullying Hurts program is designed to help students understand that bullying behaviors are those done specifically, intentionally, and repeatedly to be hurtful to others. Students will be introduced to the difference between things done accidentally and intentionally (not everything is bullying) as well as the difference between healthy conflict and unhealthy/unacceptable violence. Each type of bullying (physical, verbal, social, and cyber) is discussed and proper techniques to handle negative effects of bullying, like stress, are emphasized. Students will be introduced to appropriate ways to prevent and/or respond to bullying situations (specifically resilience) in various roles in a bullying scenario (target, bystander/upstander, bully).

Swimming with the Sharks - Students

Swimming with the Sharks - Students focuses on the importance of healthy communication and social interactions, with an emphasis on assertive communication. Students are introduced to the importance of respect through both verbal and non-verbal communication. Students will assess their communication styles to determine their likeliness for demonstrating an assertive communication style as well as the possibility to develop an understanding of the differences in aggressive/passive/passive-aggressive styles. Emphasis is placed on the difficulties with communication including personal perception and challenging emotions. Tips for healthy and assertive communication and social interactions will be addressed.

In the Flirting or Hurting program, students are introduced to a discussion about the differences between flirting (being a mutually enjoyable experience) and possible sexual harassment (being one-sided unwanted/unwelcomed attention of a sexual nature). Students may gain insight into the various possible types of sexual harassment (physical, verbal, visual, and written/cyber) that can occur. Emphasis is placed on proper ways to handle situations of sexual harassment, including within the school setting.

The Dating Game is an important social health program for teenagers that explores dating relationships. Substance Abuse Prevention

Drugs: Dilemmas & Decisions is designed to present realistic information for high school students to be able to make informed healthy decisions for themselves. This program begins with a general introduction to substance abuse, patterns of and common reasons for use/misuse/abuse, drug classifications, and the function of the nervous system. Children and teenagers are faced with decisions related to their health every day, and as they get older the pressures they face about those decisions by their peers increases. In particular, substance abuse of high concern for this age group includes inhalant abuse (also known as huffing) and nicotine-related products. The main emphasis of Huffin' 'n' Puffin' is to highlight the healthy function of the nervous and respiratory systems as well as explain (in an age-appropriate manner) the dangerous effects of these substances on our body systems.
